CALL FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR ENGAGING LOCAL CCCM PARTNER IN MAINSTREAMING ENVIRONMENTAL REHABILITATION AND MITIGATION MEASURE IN CAMPS

IOM Nigeria in support of the CCCM responses propose to work with one active local partner to mainstream environmental rehabilitation and mitigation measures with the aim of creating a communal green yard/garden where families can seat and socialize away from the congested shelter spaces by utilizing the runoff waters to irrigate the created gardens ion in two LGAs that are severely affected by environmental hazards and congestion.

Background
In north-east Nigeria, climate change-induced hazards are increasingly affecting people’s well-being, with an estimated 164,476 IDPs, with the majority (82 percent) being children and women disproportionally affected. These hazards have led to the destruction of property and infrastructure, such as shelter and non-food items, and induced secondary displacement or new displacement from areas that are inaccessible or those that have lost arable land due to desertification. Such disasters have also significantly increased the vulnerability of persons living with disabilities and the elderly.

Floods, heat waves, windstorms, and droughts characterize climate-related shocks experienced in this region. Out of the 263 IDP sites in BAY states, 79 IDP sites constituting 341,817 IDPs are at high or severe risk of flooding, while 69 IDP sites constituting 448,180 IPDs are at moderate risk of flooding, according to the sector’s flood vulnerability mapping. In a highly congested IDP site situation in the north-east, the conflictaffected populations are exposed to water-borne diseases, including cholera, due to a lack of access to WASH facilities.

Rising temperatures and extreme heat are expected to induce new challenges and exacerbate existing ones; for instance, increasing cases of campfires that have led to injuries and even deaths are now often recorded in camps during dry seasons. Against this background, IOM propose to work with one active local partner to mainstream environmental rehabilitation and mitigation measures with the aim of greening camps and reducing in two LGAs that are severely affected by environmental hazards.

Objective
To adopt culturally sensitive and protection-oriented participatory approaches in creating environmentally friendly and sustainable spaces and practices that will enhance communal socializing activities and while utilizing the natural plants and grasses to rehabilitate the environment.
