Background and Program Context
Technoserve (TNS), an international non-profit that promotes business solutions to poverty in the developing world by linking people to information, capital, and markets, manages the Inspiring Good Nutrition Initiatives Through Enterprise (IGNITE) program.
IGNITE will facilitate the activation and expansion of a catalytic collective impact initiative – the Millers 4 Nutrition (M4N) coalition – to globally coordinate and locally implement an ultimately sustainable model for delivery of technical assistance (TA) and other services to millers. The IGNITE program is implemented in eight priority countries namely Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan and Tanzania with Nigeria, Kenya, and India serving as the operational hubs.
This Micronutrient Fortification Index (MFI) forms part of a suite of M4N program solutions and specifically exists to support traditional regulatory systems with an industry-driven initiative that effectively differentiates between compliant and non-compliant companies, illustrates the characteristics aligned to fortification compliance, and serves as a pathway to promote competitive business practices amongst participants on a voluntary basis.
Technoserve’s food fortification program aims to increase the compliance rates of private sector food processors against national food fortification mandates by increasing the production of fortified food staples in Nigeria.
As part of its role in delivering the innovative programming TNS spearheaded the establishment of a CEO Forum in Nigeria. During the 2018 inaugural convening, TNS sought and received an executive level buy-in which resulted in the commitment of the following:
Incorporating food fortification as a key performance indicator in a corporate measurement framework, with regular reporting to the CEO and board; and
Regular reporting and review of progress at an industry-wide level to improve compliance with fortification regulations.
The Micronutrient Fortification Index (MFI) provides consumers with information about the fortification of staples such as wheat flour, edible oils, and sugar, and connects other stakeholders with a list of responsible companies’ adept in their accountability and social responsiveness. The industry driven index generates data and publicly shares rankings of companies’ progress on fortifying their products with essential vitamins and minerals. The MFI solution is built around a framework that highlights the core elements of sustainability including production, personnel, procurement, public engagement, governance, and a commitment to ensuring access to high-quality fortified foods
Scope of Work
General Requirements & Scope of Work
The Micronutrient Fortification Index (MFI) is a pioneering private-sector-led initiative in Nigeria that promotes industry-wide adoption of national fortification standards, serving as a quality mark for compliant companies and providing transparency for consumers and stakeholders. In engaging with the pilot companies for the index, we developed a summarized value proposition that captured the essence of the theory of change along with our reasoned assumptions.
