Overview

Project title:ASSESSMENT OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FROM THE OKO-OBA ABATTOIR, LAGOS, NIGERIA
Summary of projectTearfund is a Christian Relief and Development Agency working in over 50 countries worldwide, with a Christ-centered approach to aid and development. Tearfund’s work in Nigeria began in the early 1970s. a new Country Strategy was recently developed for the period 2024-2027 with the core approaches of Church & Community Transformation (CCT), Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), Peace building, Disasters preparedness and Response and Environmental and Economic Sustainability (EES). IKI medium grants in its current 2024 funding call focuses on two key thematic funding priorities, these are, (a) Promoting ambitious participatory measures to reduce greenhouse gases (b) integrative measures for the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity in cities. Tearfund country office in Nigeria after careful reflections and learning from previous similar calls focusing on greenhouse gas emissions such as the 2024 Mitigation Action Facility (MAF) noted the centrality of undertaking a robust research prior to making a submission for funding. This approach strengthens the chances of Tearfund’s submission given that measurement of the base year gaseous emissions at the greenhouse gas reduction rate that the project will contribute to delivering during the course of the implementation of the greenhouse gas emission reduction project and thereafter.

The aims of the assessment are:

1. To produce credible quantitative assessment of the greenhouse gas emissions rates with particular reference to CH4, N2O, and CO2 emission measured in CO2-efrom the Oko-Oba Abattoir, Lagos, Nigeria covering emissions types, emissions scopes (consistent with standard methodologies and guidelines as specified by the International Panel on Climate Change and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol) and emissions sources. (See conversion tables prepared by IPCC here and from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol here).

2. To produce credible data from the quantitative assessment of the greenhouse emissions with particular reference to CH4, N2O, and CO2 emission from the Oko-Abattoir, Lagos, Nigeria respectively enabling accurate computation of the greenhouse gas reduction rates that the project will contribute to delivering during the course of the implementation of the greenhouse gas emission reduction project and thereafter.

3. To produce credible data from measurement of CH4, N2O, and CO2 emission from the Oko-Oba Abattoir Lagos, Nigeria with a view to swerving as a baseline for the M&E framework for the greenhouse project.

4. To determine the biogas reduction potential of a prospective biogas plant in Oko-Oba Abattoir in Lagos, Nigeria
